Social Media Policy

approved by the Library Board May 25, 2022

The following policy applies to all the Petersburg Public Library’s social media channels.  Social media is defined as any platform for online publication and commentary, such as blogs, wikis, and social networking sites. The library’s social media sites are not intended to be traditional public forums for the general exchange of ideas and viewpoints, but a limited forum for discussing library programs, events and materials.

The library is not responsible for enforcing restrictions which a parent or guardian may place on a minor’s use of this resource. The library is not responsible for the content on the pages of friends, fans, or followers of the library.

Comments, posts, and messages are allowed on the library's social networking sites as long as they conform to the library's social media policy. By commenting and posting on library social media sites, users agree to the library’s social media policy. User comments expressed on social media platforms do not necessarily reflect the views of positions of the library. All interactions will be regularly monitored and reviewed for content and relevance.  The library reserves the right to monitor posted content and remove any messages that:

  • are off topic

  • are deemed abusive, vulgar, or defamatory

  • are in violation of copyright or trademark

  • are solicitations for commercial products, services, or political campaigns

  • contain confidential information

  • violates the law, the rights of any third party, or library policies

The library reserves the right to refrain from posting user submissions or comments or to remove or edit them at any time.  Postings which the library in its sole discretion deems unpermitted under this policy may be removed in whole or in part by the library immediately upon discovery by the library without prior notice. The library reserves the right to ban or block users who have posted in violation of this policy.
